BHT in Food: Safe or Sketchy?
Ever looked at a food label and spotted BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)? Don’t worry, you’re not alone if you thought, “That sounds like something I should be changing in my car every 3,000 miles.”
The FDA says it’s “generally recognized as safe” in small amounts. Translation: “It probably won’t kill you right away.” But other agencies and studies aren’t quite as optimistic.
Why People Side-Eye BHT
- Carcinogen Concerns: The National Toxicology Program calls BHT “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” That’s government-speak for “we don’t like the odds.”
- Hormone Hijacker: The European Commission thinks BHT might mess with your hormones. As if we didn’t already have enough hormone drama in life.
- Organ Damage (in Animals): At high doses, BHT has been linked to liver, kidney, and lung damage in lab animals. Lab rats are basically the unpaid interns of science, and even they’re not impressed.
- Reproductive & Developmental Risks: Some studies link BHT exposure to fertility and developmental problems in rats. Nothing says “romantic dinner” like a side of fertility issues.
- Environmental Impact: BHT has been found to build up in fish. Great—now even the trout are rolling their eyes at preservatives.
And Here’s the Kicker…
It’s not just in chips and gum. Mass cattle feedlots use BHT in feed to keep giant piles of grain from spoiling before the cows get to it. Which means your steak or gallon of milk from those mega-operations might come with a little “extra seasoning” you didn’t order.
So, yes—BHT can sneak into meat, milk, cheese, and grains too. Surprise!
What We Do at Trailhead Farm Meats
We like our food to taste like… well, food. Not a chemistry experiment. That’s why we partner with local farms and producers who don’t need to rely on alphabet-soup preservatives:
- Meats raised right here in West Virginia, without the feedlot shortcuts.
- Milk & Cheese from local dairies, fresh and flavorful.
- Jams, Jellies & Grains made by real people, not by scientists in lab coats trying to invent the world’s longest shelf life.
Because honestly—if your food needs a chemical preservative with 17 syllables just to sit on a shelf for six months, maybe it’s less “food” and more “edible science project.”

Great customer service, extremely helpful, and always available to answer questions. This was the first time we bought meat from Trailhead and now we won’t go anywhere else. Best tasting, quality beef we’ve found. The whole experience was extremely positive.
